What you should know about NELSON RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

Football in Nelson, Club in Nelson, Rolfing in Nelson, Football Clubs in Nelson

Nelson Rugby Union was a contracting member, and Nelson club, by reason of its affiliation with Nelson Rugby Union, is thus a foundation member of the New Zealand Union. The World War now over, it was agreed among the players to have one more season together before returning to the respective clubs, but at a meeting of the Old Boys’ Club it was decided to make the break this season. This season also saw the first use of a whistle to stop play in a game of rugby in New Zealand. On a trip to Wellington in 1870, Monro picked and trained a team to play against the Nelson Rugby Football Club.
This was the formation of the Nelson Football Club, a society designed to become the first Rugby Football Club in New Zealand. FOOTBALL MATCH, THE COLLEGE VS TOWN An enthusiastic football player sends us the following account of the game The toss for the kick off’ being won by the college, the respective sides are placed by the captains. Now the Town side began to play better, and by taking advantage of a chance, runs right down to the College goal, and the ball is touched down’ behind the goal, and when kicked out before the college can charge him, Drew has placed a splendid goal, after a long and obstinately contested gain. The Nelson Rugby Football Club has been associated with three historical grounds in the city.
It was here, too that Charles John Munro coached the Nelson club players in Rugby rules and where the club practised and played its first matches of rugby football. Perhaps the most notable of the achievements of Nelson Rugby Football Club is the fact that of the 418 first class matches played by Nelson Rugby Football Union to the time of the Nelson Bays experimental amalgamation in 1969, only two of the union’s teams have taken the field without a Nelson Rugby Football Club player being included. This time the Nelsonians fielded as Combined Nelson Clubs the side comprising 10 players from Nelson Club and four Collegians. The ball was then punted out, but fell short, luckily, however, one of the Wellington men succeeded in running the ball and touching down behind the goal, which gave the privilege of a fair kick at goal, when Captain Isherwood, by a good kick, this time made a goal.
The match with the Wellington side was 14 a side, there being 13 of Nelson club and one from the Picton club. For the match against the combined Canterbury club’s, 11 from Nelson club and four from Nelson College were chosen, the selection been severely beaten, failing to score whilst the opposing side gained 30 points. Auckland had 13 clubs, Canterbury 11, Taranaki 9, Wellington 7, Waikato 4, South Canterbury 4, Otago 4, Southland 3, Ashburton County 3, Waiarapa 3, Marlborough 3, Manawatu2, Nelson 2, North Otago1, West Coast 1, Poverty Bay 1 and Hawke’s Bay 1. On the 30th May 1868 The Nelson Football Club, which was to become the Nelson Rugby Football Club, was formed. This Club was to become the first Rugby Football Club in New Zealand two years later.
Thus the Union was formed on the initiative of the Nelson Rugby Football Club, just 15 years after the Nelson Club had changed to rugby rules. The first organised rugby games commenced in Nelson when the Union decided to purchase a cup for competition among the affiliated clubs
