His qualifications comprise a BA in History and Economic History from Victoria University, a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Auckland, a Master of Arts in Conservation Studies from the University of York, and he has completed ICC ROM courses in conservation of stone and earthen architecture. He was made a Fellow of the FNZIA for his services to conservation and the Institute. The practice of Ian Bowman, architect and conservator offers services in all aspects of built heritage conservation. Ian has advised on over 200 church projects from Matakohe to Dunedin including the Nelson and Dunedin Cathedrals, the Wellington, Christchurch, and Timaru Basilicas and many parish churches.
Auckland’s Town Hall was opened in 1911 and was designed by eminent Melbourne architect’s DJ and J Clarke. Ian was project manager on behalf of the Auckland City Council for the beginning stage of strengthening and conserving the tower and prow, and was then conservation architect with Jasmax Architects and Town Hall Architects Group. Museum projects include the Dominion Museum, Wellington Maritime Museum, Nair Street Cottage and Katherine Mansfield’s in Wellington, Dunedin Gasworks, Nicola’s Blacksmiths in Duntroon, the Aaron Museum and Customhouse and isl House in Nelson. In Ian advised on the Otaki Te Horn Expressway in preparing assessments of potential heritage buildings affected by the Expressway, consulting pertinent authorities and affected parties and writing an assessment of effects on the Expressway.
Ian is currently big-hearted advice on the Transmission Gully, Tunnel Duplication and Wellington Basin Reserve projects. It’s first major strengthening and refurbishment was carried out between and began with the writing of a conservation plan for the building by Ian Bowman. The longest running was the Inner City Bypass where he gave specialist advise on heritage buildings and structures affected by the Bypass between 1986 and 2007. Ian can prepare district plan heritage inventories and rules, consent assessments and design guidelines for local authorities.
Ian has been commissioned as project architect or conservation architect on a big range of projects from restoration of doc huts, to the conservation of Government House, Parliament buildings, town halls and theaters. It was saved by a group of committed individuals and its eventual conservation began with the writing of the conservation plan by Ian Bowman on behalf of the St James theater Charitable Trust. He has also completed an Association of Preservation Technology Course in Canada in the conservation of timber buildings and the Plymouth University ICC ROM course on cob building conservation in England. Specialist areas of expertise include the conservation of raw and fired earth and stone building conservation, urban conservation planning, conservation in seismic zones and historic color analysis.
As the only ICC ROM trained stone architect conservator in New Zealand Ian was needed to carry out a stone by stone condition survey to specify stone repairs as a key segment of the conservation project. This document guided the conservation labor carried out in 1993 and Ian was commissioned as conservation architect to the project with Opus International Consultants Ltd. He is an experienced expert witness in district plan and environment court hearings. Ian was appointed conservation architect to Government House where the project began with Ian writing the conservation plan that guided the overall conservation project, taking four years. theaters and cinema projects include the St James and Embassy theaters in Wellington, the Regent theater in Palmerston North, the Gaiety theater in Akaroa and the Hokitika and Greympouth Regent theaters.
Ian has advised doc on many structures throughout New Zealand in Kawau Island, Wanganui, Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, Otago and South land. His expertise in stone and earth building conservation has been utlised on these projects particularly. Ian has been extensively commissioned by local authorities to advise on all aspects of heritage conservation planning. As a registered architect, Ian combines conservation advice with the architectural services of design, documentation, contract istration and contract observation for additions and alterations to heritage buildings as well as the design of fresh buildings adjacent to heritage buildings
