What you should know about Heartwood Arts Therapy

Psychotherapy in Nelson, Health Services in Nelson, Professional Counsellors in Nelson, Art Therapy in Nelson

Therapist Motueka/NelsonMy name is Rachel and I'm a qualified creative arts therapist. What this means is that I offer creative ways for my clients to express their problems and their feelings, to offer another way to speak about and to see things. My ancestry is Jewish and Scottish, and I live in the Tasman region of New Zealand.
What I love most about being an arts therapist is finding which creative medium helps my clients to feel most at home, whether that be through music, painting, photography, clay or even dance.

I am passionate about helping my clients to get in touch with their inner child through creativity, and reconnecting them to this way of talking that in most of us has been long forgotten.

I am firm believer that we are all creative, and that there is so much wisdom within each of us waiting to come out through different forms of communication, we just need to remember how to do it.

A typical session

A typical session begins with a connecting chat, where we will check in together to see what is alive in you at the time. From here, often a metaphor comes up that describes how you see a situation or how you are feeling, to which I will invite you to create using a number of different materials at your disposal (paint, chalk, oil pastels, movement, sound).

As you create, music will gently play in the background and you are free to follow your urge to make, encouraged to let the process guide you rather than pre-planning what you will create.

After you feel it is complete, we look at the art together to see what it has to say. As your therapist, I am only a guide and not a critic of the artwork - only you know what it means and I am here to support thisprocess' unfolding. Often the artwork's message changes in time as you change and grow - it is a beautiful process to witness.

Through this process you will see yourself more clearly, find tools to cope with distressing emotions and learn to accept your ever evolving selves that are in a constant state of change.

I welcome people of all background, genders, sexual preferences and cultures to be embraced by this practice.

My mahi is person-centred, transpersonal and process-oriented. I believe the therapy room is a spiritual sacred space, and honour your way to healing.

Background

I completed my master's degree in 2018, and have since worked with addictions, the autism spectrum, childhood trauma, anxiety disorders, physical illness, chronic pain conditions, PTSD, down syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome and Alzheimer's.

I have a particular love for working in nature with natural materials, to add the full sensory dimension into my work with clients. I have extensive experience in working with mindfulness and meditation and incorporate this into my sessions to promote a space of peace, acceptance and unconditional love.

If you would like to know more or to make an appointment, please feel free to contact me.

What is Creative Arts Therapy?

Creative arts therapy is a form of psychotherapy. It uses art, media, and the creative process to facilitate the exploration of feelings, improve, self-awareness and reduce anxiety for participants. Registered Creative Arts Therapists are university trained with a Master’s Degree. They use both creative and psychotherapeutic methods to help clients better express themselves and to improve their wellbeing.
TrainingIn New Zealand, Creative Arts Therapists in training undergo 750 supervised placement hours. Once qualified they are eligible for registration with ANZACATA. ANZACATA is the peak professional body representing creative arts therapists in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia/Pacific region.
Trauma-InformedWhen creating artworks using Creative Arts Therapy, one externalises their inner feelings. Through this process, one is able to safely look at traumatic events without needing to describe them in words. It also allows for safety by using stories or metaphors to explore and alter the past. This empowers the participant to taking back authorship of their life. It creates strong boundaries around stories of suffering whilst also letting them be seen.

Speaking Without Words
As is often the case with childhood trauma, it is challenging to put these events from our past into words. This is because children do not yet have the language to comprehend, digest, or express trauma. Art making has the unique ability to look at things that cannot be explained, and release their hold over us.

Hearts-Based MahiAs this process follows the heart, all actions made by the hand are seen to have purpose. This philosophy differs from traditional art classes where one is taught a technique that is to be followed. With Creative Arts Therapy, one creates like they did as a child. Children do what they feel, not what they think they should do. Any ‘mistakes’ or ‘wrong’ marks are an opportunity to adapt and change the piece. This becomes a metaphor for how we react in life when things do not go as we had planned. Often the greatest insights can come from these moments. It shows how embracing the flow in art-making can teach one to respond to the world with creative ease.
Common Misconceptions
Myth 1 – ‘Artistic types’ are best suited to creative arts therapies
Creative arts therapies do not rely on artistic knowledge or ability. They work by accessing imagination and creativity – qualities which all human beings possess. These are used to generate new models of living and contribute to the development of a more integrated sense of self.
Myth 2 – Creative arts therapies are without a scientific basis
Evidence-based and practice-based research is well-established in all the creative arts therapies. These include visual art therapy, dance and movement therapy, dramatherapy and music therapy.
Myth 3 – The therapist interprets the work in an art therapy or creative arts therapy session
Asking people to reflect on their own creative work is an important part of a creative arts therapy process. This is because it is understood that each individual brings their own cultural influences and personal experiences to their creative process. Client and therapist therefore work in a collaborative manner aimed at empowering the person to discover their own sense-making and to reach their fullest potential.

Services

Therapy in the Studio - $100

Entering the arts therapy space is entering a place of complete acceptance for what is. Without judgement we will mindfully create and witness, exploring what is present for you, noticing and nurturing what hurts whilst watering what brings joy. Your arts therapist is your guide, your travel buddy and your protector as we gently traverse the terrain of your past, present and hopeful future at your pace.

Art MaterialsAll art materials are supplied either by mother nature or by Heartwood Arts Therapy. However, you are welcome to bring along any mediums you already own and are familiar with. If we are working inside, we’ll begin with oil and chalk pastels, paint, pencils, paper, clay, and natural/found collage media. As we develop your feelings of ease with the materials, we can play with other art mediums such as dance/movement, drama, writing and sand tray.

Price and DurationEach session is an hour long and costs $100. If this is beyond your means, you may be eligible for funding. Click here for more information.

LocationIndoor sessions are held either in Motueka at the therapy studio located at 354 High Street, or at Loveday Clinic, 17 Collingwood Street in Nelson. Alternatively, if you’d prefer to experience arts therapy in nature, click here to read about Heartwood Arts Therapy’s unique therapy in nature.

Eco-Arts Therapy - $100

Eco-arts therapy (therapy in nature) is a marriage of ecotherapy and creative arts therapy, where therapeutic art-making is explored with and in nature. It’s also referred to as environmental arts therapy, eco-art therapy or nature-based expressive arts therapy. Ecotherapy works by bringing nature back into human beings’ lives, in the ways indigenous cultures have not forgotten. If you’ve ever felt the ease from walking on the beach, or enjoying the quiet solitude of being in the forest, then you’ll know the ability for nature to heal. By combining this with art-making, you’ll reawaken to your wild, ancient self, guided by the therapist and mother nature.

How Does Eco-Arts Therapy Work?Heartwood Arts Therapy provides a unique form of therapy, by using the outdoors as a ‘Green Studio’. What this means, is that each session is held in a contained location within the natural environment. Examples include forests, on the beach, the wetlands or hilltops. Wet/cold weather options are available, and locations are dependent upon each person’s needs. With gentle holding, I will guide you through the parts of your inner landscape that causes pain. I will then invite you to express this pain through different artforms. Whichever medium speaks to you at the time – natural sculpture, movement, voice or play. All your senses will become engaged as you create in this ritualistic reawakening of self whilst held by nature’s presence.

Full Acceptance
Entering the eco-arts therapy space is entering a space of complete acceptance for what is. In other words, without judgement we will mindfully create and witness, exploring what is present for you, noticing and nurturing what hurts and watering what brings joy. Your arts therapist is your guide, your travel buddy and your protector as we gently traverse the terrain of your past, present and hopeful future at your pace.

Process-Oriented
Using the arts as a means of communication, we’ll play with different mediums, focusing on the process of creation and how it feels rather than needing to create a final piece. Meaning and healing is found in the journey, as we allow a different part of you, your intuitive bodymind, to lead the way. No previous art-making training or practice is necessary in arts therapy, only a curiosity to let go and see what unfolds.
